Citizens for Tight Borders: Official Drake club

Citizens for Tight Borders offended a lot of people last year by posting fliers around campus that described negatively described immigrants who illegally enter the United States. Many thought the group was anti-immigrant.

Those feelings continued as Student Student agreed to grant the organization full club status with a 13-10 vote with two abstentions.

Members of La Fuerza Latina expressed concern that the group was anti-immigrants, but others interjected the group had the right to free speech regarding its political views.

What do you think about illegal immigration? CTB's views certainly aren't unique. The Des Moines Register published a feature story on western Iowa Rep. Steve King who suggested the United States build a wall across the Mexican boarder that would even keep the cockroaches out. He also wants to make English the official language of the United States. King has said that Joseph McCarthy was a great American hero, as well.

I find it funny how Drake students can't understand that 70-80% of the American public support CTB's views. However, I'm not really surprised it seems to be the same way at many other colleges including my own. During debate on this issue at my university, many students were completely ignorant of the facts.

I think college students need to start researching this topic instead of learning about it via sites such as DailyKOS and other liberal blogs. There is nothing "racist" or "extremist" about opposing something that has nothing to do with race and everthing to do with its disastrous consequences on the United States.

However, as I can see from reading the Times Delphic article on CTB, it is clear that groups such as this "La Fuerza Latina" and Drake's apparent commitment to what they define as "diversity" has held free-speech hostage on campus. Simply put, diversity is difference in thought, and it looks like Drake could use some diversity in that respect. If anything, La Fuerza Latina should lend CTB an ear. Perhaps then they'd learn that minority groups suffer the worst wage decreases under illegal immigration.

What is it going to take for people to get it through their heads that illegal immigration is a problem? Illegal immigrants participated in the 1993 and 2001 WTC bombings, and they have been involved in incidents such as the Millenium plot. Anyone who spends a few hours researching the terrorism connection will see that there is a very real threat. Its not just people coming over to work.

Anyways, there's my rant for today.
